“I learned in the doing how ready I had to be. Life doesn’t hold still. A good snapshot stopped a moment from running away. Photography taught me that to be able to capture transcience, by being ready to click the shutter at the crucial moment, was the greatest need I had. Making pictures of people in all sorts of situations, I learned that every feeling waits upon its gesture;
and I had to be prepared to recognize this moment when I saw it.” Eudora Welty, author and photographer
Thank you for visiting my site! My name is Julie Hahn Kerner and I’m a documentary and lifestyle photographer based in Cleveland, Ohio.
I do my best work as a documentarian. Beyond the technical skill of using my camera equipment, my creative skill lies in seeing and capturing authentic expressions, sentimental still life, meaningful moments, and real events as they unfold — unscripted and undirected.
When documenting, I don’t direct, manage, or interfere. I am unobtrusive and attentive while I document life as it happens: the good, the bad, and the ugly, but all real.
With lifestyle photography, my goal is similar in that I aim to capture authenticity in both expression and moment, but I achieve those results with more guidance and direction to my clients. I’ll give structure to the shoot, but it will be no less of a genuine expression of who you are.
I joke by saying, “If it moves, I’ll shoot it,” but in truth I enjoy all types of projects from events and portraits (both people and pets), to products and production stills. My background is in writing, so I also take on the occasional writing project. If you have a project that you would like to discuss, please feel free to get in touch!
*Please note, I no longer photograph weddings.
